Shreyas Iyer was officially named captain of Punjab Kings for the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League.
Shreyas, who guided Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the 2024 edition, was released by the franchise later in the year and was signed by Kings for a price of INR 26.75 Crore, the second highest purchase in the auction.
The 30-year-old has experienced tremendous success in the past year within domestic cricket and the IPL, guiding teams to championships in every format.
In addition to guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to success last season, Iyer also led the Mumbai team that won the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Iyer shared his excitement about the recent progress and is optimistic about changing the fate of a team that has yet to secure an IPL championship. The Kings had their finest season in 2014 when they reached the final but were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders. PBKS held a fairly successful mega auction, and Iyer is confident that the team put together is strong enough to succeed completely.

“I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with Coach Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title.”
Iyer as captain signifies a revival of the captain-coach combo of him and Ricky Ponting, which led the Delhi Capitals to their inaugural IPL final in 2020. The Australian expressed high regard for Iyer’s credentials and seemed excited about collaborating for a new period.
