As the initial batch of Agniveers is poised to finish their four-year tenure under the Agnipath scheme by 2026, the Centre is making efforts to integrate most of them into various government positions. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has encouraged states and Union Territories to set aside quotas for trained individuals in state police forces and other sectors.
MHA urged creation of job opportunities for 75 percent of Agniveers
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has sent a letter to the chief ministers, while Union home secretary Govind Mohan has addressed chief secretaries. As stated by the chief secretary of a state, the MHA has urged the necessity to focus on creating job opportunities for around 75 percent of Agniveers who will leave the armed forces at the end of their service. The letter emphasizes that Agniveers, having completed extensive military training, will be ideally qualified for positions in law enforcement and other state-level uniformed services.
The highest-ranking official of a state stated that 25 percent of Agniveers will be incorporated into the armed forces, while CAPFs will allocate a 10 percent quota for these individuals based on their openings. If states can provide a quota of 15-20 percent, nearly 50 percent of Agniveers will secure positions in police forces.

“As you are aware…75 per cent strength of the first batch of Agniveers will be completing four years under the Agnipath scheme and coming out in the year 2026,” a senior state government official said, quoting the letter. “Therefore, we would like to request you…for providing employment opportunities and other benefits to the ex-Agniveers…by reserving vacancies for their recruitment in the state police.”
The move indicates effort to create a structured post-service path for Agniveers
The action indicates an effort by the Centre to create a structured post-service path for Agniveers—a major request since the Agnipath scheme began in 2022. The program provides short-term military service for individuals aged 17.5 to 21, offering skill enhancement and support after service; however, many still worry about the shift back to civilian life.
Although numerous states have declared job reservations or priority for Agniveers in hiring processes, the MHA’s recent announcement seeks to uniform these initiatives nationwide before the 2026 deadline.
The ministry anticipates a “positive response and timely action” to guarantee seamless reintegration of skilled youth.
