New Delhi, January 4, 2026 – India on Sunday expressed “deep concern” over the recent developments in Venezuela and said it is closely monitoring the situation, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the MEA said. The statement urged all parties involved to resolve issues through dialogue and diplomacy.
India reaffirmed its support for the well-being and safety of the Venezuelan people, calling on all stakeholders to pursue peaceful solutions to ensure stability in the region.
The MEA added that the Indian Embassy in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance. Indian nationals were also advised to avoid non-essential travel to Venezuela and to exercise extreme caution, restrict movements, and remain in touch with the Embassy.

US Strikes Venezuela, Captures Maduro
In a dramatic development, US President Donald Trump announced early Saturday that the United States had carried out a “large-scale” strike on Venezuela. The operation resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were flown out of the country. Trump said the operation was coordinated with US law enforcement.

Maduro has been charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess them against the US.
Trump claimed that the US would manage Venezuela temporarily, stating, “We are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition.” He described the operation as “extremely successful” and warned that it should serve as a deterrent to those threatening American sovereignty or lives.
Delcy Rodriguez Named Interim President
To ensure administrative continuity and safeguard national defense, Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Sunday directed Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to assume the role of Interim President. The Constitutional Chamber ruled that Rodriguez would take charge to maintain governance and security during the unfolding crisis.
