For the first time ever, India and Sri Lanka have signed a key defense cooperation agreement following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The two nations finalized several additional agreements, one of which aims to establish Trincomalee as an energy center. A new agreement was signed to extend India’s multi-sectoral grant support to the eastern part of Sri Lanka. The two leaders also launched the Sampur solar power project virtually.

The discussions come after PM Modi landed in the Sri Lankan capital following his trip to Bangkok, where he participated in a BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) summit.

In what might be the first instance of such an honor bestowed upon a foreign leader, Modi received a ceremonial reception at the historic Independence Square in Sri Lanka’s capital, where he was welcomed by President Dissanayake.

“PM @narendramodiwas welcomed by President @anuradisanayake with a ceremonial reception at the Independence Square in Colombo,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on ‘X’.

Independence Square is significant as it derives its name from the Independence Memorial Hall, which was erected to honor the nation’s liberation from British colonization in 1948.

Modi’s trip to Sri Lanka occurs when the nation is just beginning to recover from economic crisis. India provided financial aid of USD 4.5 billion when the island nation was struggling with a financial crisis three years ago.

Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake awarded Modi the Mitra Vibhushana, the highest accolade for a foreign leader, stating that Modi truly deserves this recognition.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
