On Thursday, India issued an advisory to its citizens and students in Bangladesh, urging them to limit their movements outside of their homes. The caution comes in the aftermath of ongoing quota-related violence in regions of the country.

On Thursday, India issued an advisory to its citizens and students in Bangladesh, urging them to limit their movements outside of their homes. The caution comes in the aftermath of ongoing quota-related violence in regions of the country.

“Reach out to the High Commission in case of urgency”, says advisory

India also provided 24-hour emergency numbers.

“In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid travel and minimise their movement outside their living premises. “In case of any urgency or need for assistance, please reach out to the High Commission and our Assistant High Commissions,” the advisory read.

6 killed, 100 others injured in violent protests

On Wednesday, student demonstrators demanding improvements to the quota system in government positions declared intentions to impose a complete nationwide shutdown on Thursday (today) in response to security forces’ operations.

The conflicts killed at least six people, including four students, across the country.

A key coordinator of the movement, Asif Mahmud, in a Facebook post, said all establishments, barring hospitals and emergency services, will remain closed, and only ambulance services will be permitted to operate.

The movement encourages students from all educational institutions to participate and asks guardians to support their cause, according to a publication.

Meanwhile, authorities deployed paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops in four major towns as hundreds of police officers in riot gear fanned out across the country’s public universities.
