The faint hope that once flickered for Indian nurse Nimisha Priya’s release is now rapidly dimming, as diplomatic efforts appear to stall and the victim’s family holds firm on its demand for justice through execution. Convicted of the 2017 murder of Yemeni businessman Talal Abdo Mahdi, Nimisha’s only chance at clemency lies in the acceptance of diya (blood money) by the victim’s kin.
However, her family’s emotional appeals and fundraising efforts have met a wall of resistance. The Mahdi family has unequivocally rejected any reconciliation, calling for her death sentence to be carried out without delay. Although Indian diplomatic channels and humanitarian advocates continue to push for a negotiated resolution, conflicting reports about a supposed revocation of the death sentence have added confusion, not clarity.

Victim’s family insists on execution
Abdul Fattah Mahdi, brother of the deceased Yemeni businessman Talal Abdo Mahdi, has rejected all offers of reconciliation or diya (blood money), demanding Nimisha Priya’s execution be carried out immediately. They denounce any negotiation or mediation as unacceptable and call for justice for the loss of their loved one.
Execution still deferred, but fate uncertain
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that execution is currently on hold and that diplomatic efforts through third‑party allies are still underway. However, officials clarified that reports claiming her death sentence has been revoked are inaccurate.

Conflicting claims about reprieve
The office of Grand Mufti Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar has publicly stated the death sentence has been cancelled or overturned. However, Indian government sources and media reporting point to ongoing ambiguity, with no official Yemeni confirmation of full pardon or commutation.
Hopes fading?
With Talal’s family firmly rejecting clemency and diplomatic channels not yet breaking through, the reprieve remains fragile. The absence of clear declaration from Yemeni authorities means Nimisha’s fate hangs in the balance. For Nimisha, the absence of official Yemeni confirmation of any reprieve means her future remains shrouded in uncertainty, with the shadow of execution looming large.
