The Union Home Ministry is expected to announce the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) regulations today. 2019 saw the passage of the CAA Act by both Houses of Parliament. Home Minister Amit Shah has repeatedly said that CAA regulations will be announced prior to the April–May Lok Sabha elections.
The CAA will be put into effect nationwide in a week, according to a statement made earlier by Union Minister Shantanu Thakur. The legislation would be swiftly implemented, according to Bongaon-based BJP MP Thakur, within seven days.
Under the CAA, persecuted migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who are members of the following six communities—Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians—will be granted Indian citizenship.
The law has been opposed by the opposition parties, including as the Congress and TMC, and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that the statute will not be implemented in her state.
Mamata Banerjee declared in January of this year that she would never, in her lifetime, consent to the state implementing CAA. She claimed that in the run-up to the elections, the BJP “opportunistically raised” the CAA issue.
“The BJP has once again raised the CAA issue in order to garner political advantages as the elections draw near. However, I want to be quite clear that I would not permit its execution in West Bengal as long as I live,” Banerjee stated.
