Phogat was competing against former Army captain and BJP candidate Yogesh Bairagi for the Julana seat in Haryana's Jind district. Olympian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat wins from Julana constituency with over 6000 votes

A former Olympic wrestler Vinesh, who is now a politician was facing an electoral challenge in the Julana assembly seat in as a Congress candidate. The party last succeeded in gaining the seat in 2005.

Vinesh Phogat was competing against former Army captain and BJP candidate Yogesh Bairagi for the Julana seat in Haryana’s Jind district. Additional contenders include the current Julana MLA and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) contestant Amarjeet Dhanda, as well as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contender and wrestler Kavita Dalal.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won the Julana seat from 2009 to 2019. The Congress last won this seat in 2005.

Bajrang Punia congratulates Vinesh Phogat

“Many congratulations to the country’s daughter Vinesh Phogat for her victory. This fight was not just for one Julana seat, it was not just with 3-4 other candidates, it was not just a fight between parties. This fight was against the strongest oppressive forces in the country. And Vinesh emerged victorious,” Bajrang Punia, who joined the Congress days before the Haryana assembly election 2024 along with Vinesh Phogat, posted in Hindi on X.

Amarjeet Dhanda of JJP won the seat in 2019

Amarjeet Dhanda from the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), secured the seat in the 2019 election. Parminder Singh Dhull, an Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate, emerged victorious in the seat in both 2009 and 2014.

The elections in Haryana took place in one phase on October 5, and saw a voter turnout of 67.90 percent. Julana witnessed a voter participation rate of 74.66 percent.
