Legendary folk artist Sharda Sinha passes away at 72 after prolonged battle with multiple myeloma
Legendary folk artist Sharda Sinha passed away on November 5th. Famous for her Chhath songs, the Padma Bhushan awardee was hospitalized at AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi on October 27.
Sinha, aged 72, had been battling with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, since the year 2018. Anshuman Sinha, her son, who had been posting updates about her health on social media, announced the news on Instagram.
Anshuman shared a photo of her and wrote a note on her official Instagram account, “Your prayers and love will always remain with my mother. Chhathi Maiya has called her to herself. She is no longer with us in physical form.”

PM Modi offers condolences to the Icon
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to the legendary artist on X. He wrote, “Extremely saddened to hear about the demise of the famous folk singer Sharda Sinha Ji. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri traditional songs have been widely loved for many years. Her beautiful songs connected to the significant Chhath festival will echo throughout eternity. Her exit is an irreversible setback to the music industry. During this time of sorrow, I offer my sincere sympathy to her family and fans. Om Shanti!”

Sharda Sinha, affectionately called ‘Bihar Kokila’, was a famous folk singer from India recognized for her significant impact on Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi music. She played a key role in introducing Bihar’s traditional music to a broader audience. Some of her hit songs include Kelwa Ke Paat Par Ugalan Suraj Mal Jhake Jhuke, Hey Chhathi Maiya, Ho Dinanath, Bahangi Lachakat Jaaye, Roje Roje Ugelaa, Suna Chhathi Maai, Jode Jode Supawa, and Patna Ke Ghat Par. In 2018, she received the Padma Bhushan honor.
