The death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran triggered a wave of missile and drone retaliation, sparking attacks across Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf.

March 2: The Middle East plunged further into turmoil on March 2, 2026, after Iranian state media released dramatic footage of a U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle engulfed in flames, spiraling toward the ground over Kuwaiti airspace. The incident, occurring on the third day of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, has intensified fears of a wider regional war involving multiple fronts and actors.

Iran claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft, calling it a successful interception amid ongoing hostilities. However, unconfirmed reports and social media analyses suggest the jet may have been struck by friendly fire from a Kuwaiti or allied Patriot system during chaotic missile exchanges. Videos show the twin-engine fighter trailing fire from one engine before plummeting, with at least one parachute deploying as the pilot ejected. Both pilots reportedly survived, with one U.S. airman later receiving shelter from Kuwaiti residents. Debris fell near the Mina Al Ahmadi refinery, injuring two workers.

The escalation began on February 28 with U.S.-Israel strikes, codenamed Operation Epic Fury, targeting Tehran’s military and nuclear sites. The operation killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with senior officials, triggering waves of Iranian missile and drone retaliation against Israeli cities and U.S. bases across the Gulf.

Civilian infrastructure has suffered heavily, from airport closures in Dubai to missile strikes on schools, hotels, and residential neighborhoods. Official casualties now exceed 200, including at least three U.S. service members.

Hezbollah’s entry on March 2 further widened the front, launching attacks on Israeli targets near Haifa, prompting retaliatory Israeli strikes in Beirut that reportedly killed at least 31 people.

With Iran’s leadership in disarray and multiple proxies now involved, the conflict risks spiraling further, threatening to engulf the region entirely. The F-15 incident underscores how a single targeted strike has triggered a multi-front crisis with global ramifications.
