Isfahan, home to military bases and nuclear-linked facilities, has been previously hit under Operation Midnight Hammer. Tensions rise as Trump threatens further strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if conflict resolution stalls

March 31, 2026: US President Donald Trump has posted a video of dramatic explosions in central Iran’s city of Isfahan, as reports from multiple media outlets and US officials indicate that the footage may show the aftermath of strikes on a major Iranian military target.
The clip shared by Trump on social media shows a sequence of powerful blasts lighting up the night sky with towering flames, followed by what appears to be multiple secondary explosions. The former president did not provide additional context with the post, and independent verification of the video’s origin remains limited.
According to a US official cited by The Wall Street Journal, American forces struck an ammunition depot in Isfahan with 2,000‑pound bunker‑buster bombs, part of a broader aerial campaign in the month‑long conflict with Iran. A significant number of penetrator munitions were reportedly used, and the blast effects seen in the footage may stem from both the initial strike and subsequent detonation of stored ordnance at the site.

Isfahan, a city of more than two million people, is home to important military infrastructure, including the Badr military airbase and facilities linked to Iran’s missile and possible nuclear development programs. It has been targeted previously in strikes last year, including under Operation Midnight Hammer, when US forces hit suspected nuclear‑related sites.

The strike comes amidst a broader escalation in hostilities between the United States, Israel and Iran. Trump and Israeli leaders have repeatedly asserted that Tehran is close to acquiring nuclear weapon capability — a claim not supported by the United Nations nuclear watchdog — and have justified continued military pressure on that basis.
Iranian state media and local sources have reported explosions and military activity in multiple areas, though official Iranian confirmation of this specific strike in Isfahan has not been issued. Footage circulating on social media shows smoke plumes and fireballs, and users on various platforms suggest the detonation of ammunition or missile storage facilities, but such posts have not been independently verified.
The strikes occurred a day after Trump warned that the United States could target Iran’s energy infrastructure, including power plants and oil facilities, if Tehran did not agree to conditions to end the conflict. In past remarks, he threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s electric generating plants and oil wells should negotiations stall.
International concern is growing as the conflict enters its fifth week, with regional tensions affecting global energy markets and prompting diplomatic movements aimed at de‑escalation while military actions continue.
