The current tension between Iran and Israel is happening amidst a history of deep-seated animosity and strategic competition in the Middle East. Russia’s position regarding the threat to Iran, with which it shares a strong strategic alliance, indicates increased worldwide anxiety about the possibility of a larger conflict that could involve nearby nations and affect global energy resources.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov clearly warned the U.S. against offering direct military assistance to Israel or even entertaining such “speculative options,” cautioning that such actions “would radically destabilise the entire situation,” as reported by Russia’s Interfax news agency. His remarks indicate Moscow’s worries regarding the conflict escalating and impacting Russia’s interests in the Middle East, where it maintains strategic alliances and military presence.
US President Donald Trump had recently disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested mediating between Israel and Iran during a call on June 17. Trump mentioned that he rejected the proposal, advising Putin to concentrate on the conflict in his own nation, Ukraine.
