Sheikh Abdul Rashid granted temporary bail in a terror funding case
Sheikh Abdul Rashid, Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla, was freed from Tihar Jail on Wednesday after a Delhi court granted him temporary bail in a terror funding case until October 2.
Upon his release from prison, Engineer Rashid made a commitment to oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Naya Kashmir’ narrative. He was released, enabling him to participate in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.
“After spending 5.5 years in prison, I now feel more resilient and filled with pride for my community. I vow to stand by my people and oppose Modi’s failed ‘Naya Kashmir’ agenda in Jammu and Kashmir.” He said that whatever he did on August 5, 2019 was rejected by the people.

A high-ranking prison officer stated that Rashid was set free from prison at 4.15 pm. He is being released before the Assembly Elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rashid has been in jail since 2019 following an arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act related to a terror funding case from 2017.
Rashid won against former CM Omar Abdullah in Baramulla Lok Sabha polls
Rashid emerged victorious over former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla Lok Sabha polls of 2024.
The upcoming 2024 Assembly elections will be the initial local elections held in Jammu and Kashmir after the repeal of Article 370.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections will take place over three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1 with results announced on October 8.
Rashid to campaign for J&K Assembly polls
Rashid’s political organization, Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), is planning to participate in the forthcoming assembly elections.
Rashid was granted temporary bail by Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh on the condition of a personal bond worth Rs 2 lakh and a surety of equal value. The judge also set requirements, such as prohibiting Rashid from talking about the terrorism case with the press.
