The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has detained Shankar Adhya, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in connection with a purported ration distribution scheme. The arrest happened the day after an ED team was ambushed while en route to raid the home of another TMC commander.
The ED conducted a thorough investigation of the premises connected to Shankar Adhya in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, leading to his arrest. Adhya was the previous chairman of Bangaon municipality. In spite of her husband’s cooperation with the investigative agency personnel during the investigation, his wife Jyotsna Adhya claimed her husband was arrested.
As Shankar Adhya was being taken away by central forces, there were protests from the locals.
In relation to the suspected ration distribution fraud, the ED was conducting raids on the West Bengal properties of TMC leaders Shankar Adhya and Sahajahan Sheikh. Approximately thirty percent of the Public Distribution System (PDS) ration intended for West Bengali beneficiaries was allegedly diverted to the free market, according to the investigative agency.
