Delhi LG enhances EWS income limit to ₹5 lakh for admission in Pvt schools

The enhanced income limit of ₹5 lakh for EWS admissions in private schools is set to expand educational access for a larger segment of economically disadvantaged families. This move ensures greater inclusivity, allowing students from more moderate-income households to benefit from reserved seats in private institutions

BY PC Bureau

In a move that is expected to benefit a significantly larger number of students, Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena has approved the enhancement of the annual income threshold for students from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Disadvantaged Groups to secure admission in private schools. The limit has been raised from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh.

This decision follows repeated delays by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, despite clear directions from the Delhi High Court and earlier recommendations by the LG himself.

Larger Pool of Beneficiaries
The enhancement will expand the eligibility criteria for EWS admissions, enabling more students across both reserved and general categories to access private school education. The move aligns with the Delhi High Court’s order dated December 5, 2023, which directed the Delhi Government to raise the threshold from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh.

A Timeline of Delays
In October 2024, the Delhi Government initially proposed increasing the threshold to ₹2.5 lakh. However, the LG approved the proposal with strong advice to the Chief Minister to reconsider and raise the limit to ₹5 lakh, as recommended by the High Court.

The government’s reluctance to implement the full increase led to further judicial intervention. On November 13, 2024, the High Court noted that its earlier orders had not been adhered to, emphasizing the need for compliance.

Final Approval
The latest revision to the ₹5 lakh limit was submitted to the LG’s office for approval today, marking the end of the prolonged stalemate. The decision ensures that a much larger number of students from economically weaker backgrounds will now have access to quality education in Delhi’s private schools.

Broader Implications
The decision reflects a significant step towards greater inclusivity in education. By aligning with judicial directives and increasing the income threshold, the Delhi Government aims to make private schooling more accessible to students who need it most.

The measure has been widely welcomed as a long-overdue reform, promising brighter educational prospects for thousands of underprivileged students in the national capital.
