New Delhi: The organisers of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Tuesday confirmed the exclusion of Hockey, Badminton, Table Tennis, Shooting , Cricket and wrestling among prominent sports from the games programme.
The Events that’ll be part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games are Athletics and Para-athletics (Track&Field), Swimming and Para-swimming, Artistic Gymnastics, Track Cycling and Para Track cycling, Netball, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Boxing, judo, Bowls and Para Bowls, 3×3 Basketball and 3×3 wheelchair Basketball.
“The Games will include 10 sports – striking a balance between ensuring the event has a multi-sport feel and the need to manage financial and operational risk,” the Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement. “Cost and operational risk were the main drivers. Every venue introduced brings added costs and complexity for venue hire, security, transport etc. To minimise those risks, it was determined that it would be too costly to add additional venues,” the organisers stated.

The Glasgow Games
The Games will take place across four venues- Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Emirate Arena- Including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). Athletes and Support staff will be housed in hotel accommodation.
For pulling out of the Games as hosts pf 2026 Commonwealth Games due to “Significant Increase in the projected Costs” , the Victorian Government had to pay a compensation of Aus$380 million to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
Hockey had been a part of CWG since 1998 and India have been the second-best team in the Games’ history, with the men and women’s teams securing six medals – including one gold, four silver and a bronze. In Birmingham, Indian men finished second while the women settled for bronze.
The country has traditionally been a powerhouse in shooting events at the CWG bagging 135 medals, including 63 gold over all editions. Though there was no shooting in the 2022 Birmingham CWG, the 2018 edition saw India bag a rich haul of 16 medals – the most by any country in that edition. It included 7 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals.
This decision of exclusion of prominent sporting events from the Games will severely impact India’s medal tally this time.
