Government states that the case is ‘an isolated one’
The government of India verified a new case of monkeypox (mpox), stating it was isolated and distinct from the strain deemed a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).
After a traveler from a nation with ongoing mpox transmission arrived in India, a man was quarantined and hospitalized due to suspicions of carrying the virus.
‘Infection related to travel’, says Health Ministry
The Union Health Ministry stated that the isolated case was due to an “infection related to travel”.
“The previously suspected case of Mpox has been verified as a travel-related infection. Laboratory testing has confirmed the presence of the mpox virus of West African clade 2 in the patient. This case is an isolated case, similar to the earlier 30 cases reported in India from July 2022 onwards, and is not a part of the current public health emergency (reported by WHO) which is regarding clade 1 of mpox,” the ministry said.

The man with mpox is presently quarantined at a specialized tertiary care isolation center. The ministry stated that the patient is still in good condition, with no signs of any other medical conditions or illnesses.
The situation corresponds to previous risk evaluations and remains under control as per standard procedures.
“Public health measures, including contact tracing and monitoring, are actively in place to ensure the situation is contained. There is no indication of any widespread risk to the public at this time,” the health ministry said.
