New Delhi:
India suffered a heartbreaking 22-run defeat against England in the third Test at Lord’s, falling short while chasing a modest target of 193. Despite a gritty half-century from Ravindra Jadeja and resistance from the lower order, India couldn’t cross the finish line, collapsing from a hopeful position to 170 all out on Day 4.
Herschelle Gibbs Slams Bumrah’s Approach
In the aftermath of the loss, former South Africa batter Herschelle Gibbs took aim at India’s performance, criticising the team’s lack of batting intent. Posting on X, Gibbs wrote, “Came close in the end but lack of intent cost India the game.”

The remark sparked speculation online, with many assuming the comment was directed at Jadeja. However, Gibbs later clarified that he was referring to Jasprit Bumrah, questioning the pacer’s approach during the tense final moments of the match.
“Bumrah has the most runs in an over for a batsman in Test cricket… where was that intent today?” he added, referring to Bumrah’s record-breaking 35-run over against Stuart Broad in 2022.
Bumrah and Siraj Show Resistance, But Fall Short
With India reeling at 82/7, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj combined with Jadeja to stitch together a late recovery. The trio dragged the match into the final session of Day 4, but the effort ultimately fell short as the visitors were bowled out for 170.
Bumrah, known for his explosive cameo against England in the past, failed to make a significant impact with the bat this time. His defensive approach was seen by some, including Gibbs, as a missed opportunity in a game that demanded bold strokes.

Shubman Gill: Proud, But Lessons to Learn
Indian captain Shubman Gill, who is leading the side, acknowledged the narrow defeat with a mix of pride and regret. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill said:
“We were confident of chasing it down. A couple of 50-run partnerships at the top would’ve changed the game. Proud of the way the lower order fought, but we didn’t apply ourselves well enough early on.”
Gill also emphasised the importance of capitalising on opportunities and called for better decision-making under pressure in future matches.
Jadeja’s Lone Stand Highlights Batting Woes
Ravindra Jadeja stood tall amidst the collapse, scoring a composed half-century to give India hope. His innings was a masterclass in patience and temperament, but lack of support from the top order meant the effort was in vain.
The left-hander once again proved his value in crunch situations, but the team’s reliance on him to bail them out is becoming increasingly evident.
England Hold Their Nerve in Tight Finish
England’s bowlers held their composure in the final session, picking up crucial wickets at regular intervals to seal a thrilling win. Despite a spirited Indian comeback, the home side’s relentless pressure proved decisive in clinching the Test.
