A terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir today resulted in the death of one tourist and injuries to six others. Medical teams and security forces have quickly arrived at the location.
Gunshots was heard in the higher fields of Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam. The region can be accessed solely by walking or riding a horse.
The terrorists seemed to be in disguise, and it is thought to be a deliberate assault.
Pahalgam, famous for its woodlands, pristine lakes, and vast meadows, is a sought-after tourist destination.
The attack occurred during the busiest tourist time in the Valley and also while registration for this year’s Amarnath Yatra is taking place nationwide. The 38-day pilgrimage will commence on July 3, starting from two paths: the 48-km Pahalgam route located in Anantnag district and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
During his latest visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a high-level security review meeting, during which he issued directives for the total elimination of terrorism, paying particular attention to the Jammu division. He also issued instructions to guarantee no tolerance for infiltration.
Mehbooba Mufti, the Chief of Peoples Democratic denounced the terror attack, “Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced”.
“Historically, Kashmir has welcomed tourists warmly, making this rare incident deeply concerning. A thorough investigation is needed to bring the perpetrators to justice and examine potential security lapses. Ensuring visitor safety is paramount, and steps must be taken to prevent future attacks,” she added.
