Dinesh Pratap Singh, the BJP’s Raebareli candidate, admitted defeat to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, as vote counting for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections continued. In a social media post, Singh asked for “forgiveness from the people” of Raebareli, claiming that the “decision was not in our hands” despite party members working relentlessly to clinch a victory in the Congress bastion.

According to the most recent Election Commission figures, Rahul Gandhi led in the high-profile seat with 3,60,914 votes, while the BJP candidate trailed with 1,59,870.

Dinesh Pratap Singh seeks forgiveness from people

In his post on Facebook, Dinesh Pratap Singh said, “I served the people of Raebareli with great humility and hard work. However, if I have made any mistake in my thoughts, words or deeds during my service or have hurt anyone, then I seek forgiveness.”

“I am grateful to all of our supporters and party members who worked tirelessly and fought the election valiantly, but the outcome was beyond our control. The people is the form of God, thus whatever mandate they provide shall be accepted with reverence,” he added.

The BJP candidate also assured the people of Raebareli of his constant support for the constituency.

Raebareli voted in fifth phase on May 20

Raebareli voters went to the polls on May 20, the fifth phase of the 2024 general election.

Sonia Gandhi represented the Raebareli constituency from 2004 until 2024, and it is considered the Gandhi-Nehru family’s historic pocket borough.

The seat had previously been held by Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
