This afternoon, BJP workers and police clashed in Sandeshkhali, after party workers were being stopped from entering Sandeshkhali, where women have been agitating over alleged atrocities committed against them by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shajahan Sheikh and his aides. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was hurt during the fight. He lost consciousness, and was taken to the hospital.
While addressing media in the North 24 Parganas area, Majumdar, a Lok Sabha MP, lost his balance during a confrontation with the police and landed on the bonnet of the automobile.
The incident took place near Taki, near the India-Bangladesh border, on the banks of the Ichamati River. Following the incident, the Bengal BJP president was reportedly transported to the Basirhat sub-divisional hospital by the police.
Sukanta Mazumder was prevented from leaving a guest house in Taki, North 24 Parganas district, earlier in the day by Bengal police. To stop BJP leaders from traveling to Sandeshkhali, where section 144 has been enforced, a sizable police presence was mobilized.
However, BJP leaders defied prohibitory orders and continued their march towards Sandeshkhali, leading to a scuffle with police.
The incident occurred the day after attempts to disobey prohibitory orders led to fighting between BJP supporters and police officers in Basirhat, around 40 miles from Sandeshkhali. Under the Basirhat police district is Sandeshkhali.
The altercation started when the BJP said that its leaders would stage a protest outside the Superintendent of Police’s office in Basirhat to voice their disapproval of the Sandeshkhali situation.
While marching to the SP office, the party, led by Sukanta Majumdar, attempted to breach police barricades, which resulted in a skirmish with police. Lathicharge was used by the police to scatter the demonstrators.
“This is a lawless situation in Bengal. The state government is trying to hide the truth,” PTI quoted Majumdar as saying on Tuesday.
The BJP is allegedly attempting to damage the state’s atmosphere, according to the Trinamool Congress, which is led by Mamata Banerjee.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of Bengal, stated on Monday that the administration was keeping a careful eye on the situation and taking the appropriate action.
The female protestors asserted that Shajahan Sheikh and his associates had forcibly taken their land and were harassing local women sexually.
Since a mob attacked a team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) who attempted to inspect Sheikh’s home in relation to a ration scam in January, Sheikh has remained missing.
