Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Trump’s initiative as “decisive progress” and reaffirmed India’s support for a “durable and just peace.” While some Arab nations welcomed the proposal, Israel’s leadership remains divided, with Netanyahu backing parts of the plan but critics calling it unworkable.

New Delhi, Oct 4 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that Hamas is prepared for a “lasting peace” in Gaza and urged Israel to “immediately stop” its bombing campaign to allow the safe release of hostages. His remarks, made in a post on Truth Social, mark the most direct intervention yet in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

“Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly! Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that,” Trump wrote. “We are already in discussions on the details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.”

Trump also shared Hamas’s official statement, in which the Palestinian militant group said it “appreciates the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump” in pressing for an end to Israeli strikes. Hamas declared it is prepared to release all Israeli hostages — alive or dead — under Trump’s peace framework, while demanding a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and rejecting any displacement of Palestinians.

The group noted it accepted several elements of Trump’s proposal, including relinquishing power and freeing remaining captives, but stressed that other aspects would require further consultation among Palestinian factions.

The proposal, according to diplomatic sources, covers a ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, phased Israeli pullout, humanitarian access, and future governance of Gaza. While some Arab nations and the Palestinian Authority have cautiously welcomed it, reactions in Israel have been mixed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has endorsed parts of the plan tied to hostage returns and Hamas’s dismantling, but hardliners within his government have dismissed the framework as “unrealistic.”

In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the development as a “significant step forward.” He praised Trump’s role, saying peace efforts in Gaza were “making decisive progress,” and pledged India’s “strong support for all initiatives aimed at achieving a durable and just resolution.”

India has traditionally supported a two-state solution while maintaining close ties with both Israel and Arab nations. Modi’s swift endorsement underscores New Delhi’s desire to project itself as a supporter of peace initiatives in the wider Middle East, a region crucial to India’s energy and diaspora interests.

Despite Trump’s optimism, analysts caution that deep mistrust between Israel and Hamas, coupled with the complexities of implementing a credible ceasefire and governance plan, could stall progress. For now, the fate of the hostages and the course of the war in Gaza remain at the heart of what Trump has described as “very close” to peace in the Middle East.
