In response to the assault, security has been stepped up across Bishnupur and adjoining districts, with extra checkpoints and patrols deployed. The incident has reignited concerns over escalating tensions in Manipur, where sporadic clashes have continued to test law enforcement. Search operations remain underway to track down those responsible.
The attack took place on the evening of September 19 at Nambol Sabal Leikai, when armed assailants opened fire on a security vehicle around 7:30 p.m. The convoy, en route to a routine patrol, came under heavy gunfire from unidentified attackers believed to have used automatic weapons. The lead vehicle was hit, killing two soldiers instantly and injuring five others. The wounded were rushed to a nearby medical facility, where two remain in critical condition.
Authorities suspect the ambush was meticulously planned, with the attackers appearing to know the convoy’s route and timing. In the past, valley-based insurgent outfits and militias have generally been linked to similar attacks on Assam Rifles in Bishnupur.
