A high-profile UAPA case has been registered against Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, over alleged ties with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani national linked to ISI. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma calls it a national security matter, while Gogoi labels it a smear campaign.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s wife and a Pakistani national. The case, registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), has escalated into a major political controversy.
The case, filed at the CID Police Station as CID PS Case No. 05/2025, includes charges under Sections 48, 61, 152, and 197(1) of the IPC, along with Section 13(1) of the UAPA, 1967. To oversee the investigation, the DGP has appointed a high-level team led by senior officials, including M.P. Gupta, IPS (SDGP, CID), Pranabjyoti Goswami, IPS (AIGP, Administration), Rosie Kalita, APS (SP, Chief Minister’s Security Vigilance), and Moitrayee Deka, APS (ADC, Guwahati).

Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh has links to Elizabeth Gogoi, a British citizen and the wife of Gaurav Gogoi. According to Sarma, Elizabeth was previously associated with ‘LEAD Pakistan,’ a climate change organization in Islamabad, and maintained professional ties with Sheikh through environmental initiatives operating in India and Pakistan. The Chief Minister claimed that Sheikh has connections to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI, and framed the issue as a national security concern rather than a political dispute.

“This is not just a political issue—it is a matter of national security. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh has well-established links to Pakistan’s ISI, and his connection with Elizabeth Gogoi raises serious concerns. We cannot allow foreign interference in India’s internal affairs,” Sarma has said.

Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated, accusing Sarma of misusing law enforcement to attack his family. He asserted that his wife’s work in climate change organizations was fully transparent and had no links to any foreign intelligence agency. He further criticized the BJP-led Assam government for fabricating charges to suppress opposition voices and divert public attention from governance failures.
“This is nothing but a politically motivated witch-hunt orchestrated by Himanta Biswa Sarma to target my family. My wife’s work in climate change has always been transparent, and these baseless allegations are a desperate attempt to silence the opposition,” Gogoi said.
With political tensions escalating, Congress leaders have condemned the investigation as an attempt to silence dissent ahead of the upcoming elections, while the BJP continues to defend its actions as necessary for national security.
