Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese secured victory in the nation’s federal election and is poised to retain his majority government, as his centre-left Labour Party dominated the voting, according to local media reports.
The Opposition leader, Peter Dutton, lost his home seat of Dickson in Brisbane to Ali France of the Labour Party just after Australia’s national broadcaster, the ABC, announced that his Liberal-National coalition had lost the election in a disastrous outcome for the coalition. That has not occurred to a party leader since 2007, when John Howard — who was Dutton’s mentor — lost his seat in Sydney.
First Australian PM to secure a 2nd term
Albanese’s return to office is significant, as it marks him as the first Australian prime minister to secure a second term since 2004.
The current prime minister entered election day, showing optimism about his party regaining power with a majority, having outperformed Dutton during the five-week campaign.
A few months prior, the Coalition was leading in the polls; however, it lost backing because of vague policies, criticism regarding parallels with US President Donald Trump, and Labour’s vigorous opposition to its nuclear reactor proposals and supposed danger to Medicare.
At 62, Dutton tried to portray himself as a composed and seasoned leader to guide Australia through a period of worldwide instability, exacerbated by Trump’s trade conflict.
PM Modi congratulates Albanese
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his Australian colleague for the victory and stated that the mandate reflects the public’s trust in his leadership.
“Congratulations @AlboMP on your resounding victory and re-election as Prime Minister of Australia! This emphatic mandate indicates the enduring faith of the Australian people in your leadership. I look forward to working together to further deepen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and advance our shared vision for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific,” PM Modi posted on X.
