Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he had spoken with the White House following the shooting and urged President Donald Trump to immediately halt federal immigration operations in the state. Details of the incident remained unclear late Saturday.
“Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now,” Walz said in a post on X.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the person who was shot was armed with a handgun and two magazines, calling the situation “evolving.” DHS also released a photograph of the firearm it said was recovered at the scene. A hospital record reviewed by the Associated Press identified the victim as a 51-year-old man.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue during a federal enforcement operation involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies..

Bystanders and protesters gathered at the scene soon after the shooting, shouting at federal agents and demanding they leave the area. Video posted on social media showed agents pushing at least one protester into a vehicle, while another officer appeared to mock the crowd as he walked away. Barricades were later erected and dumpsters set on fire as tensions escalated.
The shooting comes as Minneapolis remains on edge following weeks of protests over stepped-up federal immigration enforcement. Demonstrations began after the January 7 fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renée Nicole Good during an ICE operation. Thousands of people marched through the city on Friday, a day before the latest incident, despite sub-zero temperatures.
