Jabnaury 23, 2026: Amid a “vicious vilification campaign” on social media by some `hatemongers’, the family of Nengtinlhing Haokip has issued a detailed clarification, categorically rejecting allegations that her death was caused by an overdose and describing such claims as cruel, false, and deeply hurtful.
In a moving statement titled “Clarification regarding the allegations,” the family said rumours circulating online—particularly from certain Meitei social media handles—bear no relation to the reality of their daughter’s prolonged and traumatic medical struggle.
“To those who did not walk this path with us, it is easy to speak in whispers and rumors. But for those of us who lived it, the reality was a long, agonizing battle for my daughter’s life and dignity,” the statement reads.

A Long Medical Ordeal, Not a Sudden Tragedy
Detailing her medical history, the family explained that Nengtinlhing’s condition was complex and severe, requiring treatment across multiple institutions.
“Because of the extreme complexity of her condition, her medical journey took us from Kangpokpi CHC to Kohima, and eventually to the ICU in Guwahati,” the family said, stressing that she was not merely “sick” but enduring intense physical and psychological trauma.
According to the clarification, the cumulative impact of her injuries and pain led to deep mental distress.
“She was navigating a level of physical trauma and unbearable pain that eventually broke her psychological well-being. This trauma left her in a state of confusion and senility—she would often roam, lost in her own mind, unable to grasp the world around her.”

The family said the severity of her injuries made her dependent on multiple medications, while her deteriorating mental state often caused disorientation.
“She would forget she had already taken a dose, take another, or lose track of which pill followed the other. This was never an act of choice; it was a symptom of her suffering.”
Critical ICU Episodes and Internal Bleeding
The clarification also reveals that this confusion once placed her life in immediate danger.
“In fact, this exact confusion once landed her in the Guwahati ICU, where her life hung by a thread.”
On the day of her death, the family said she suffered a severe medical crisis marked by panic, disorientation, and chronic complications.
“She was in the grip of a severe panic attack, disoriented and roaming, before her body finally gave way and she fainted,” the statement says, adding that she was also battling “chronic complications involving her womb, which caused frequent and severe internal bleeding.”
‘A Knife to the Heart of a Grieving Family’
The family expressed anguish at allegations that her death was caused by an overdose, calling such claims not just inaccurate but morally reprehensible.
“To hear people—whether through ignorance or a deliberate desire to be cruel—claim that her death was due to an ‘overdose’ or other false allegations is a knife to the heart of our grieving family.”
They went further, describing the narrative being spread online as an assault on Nengtinlhing’s dignity.
“These words are not just false; they are a desecration of the memory of a woman who fought every single day against a body and mind that were failing her.”
‘We Know the Truth’
In a deeply personal passage, the family spoke of the emotional toll of caregiving and loss, and their decision to no longer engage with malicious narratives.
“We have endured the ordeal of her illness, the exhaustion, and now the bottomless pit of her loss. We do not have the strength to fight those with bad intent.”
Ending the statement on a note of quiet resolve, the family said:
“We know the truth, and God knows the truth. We leave the judgment to Him, and we ask for the peace to mourn our daughter in the truth of who she actually was.”
