The hardware of the Galaxy Watch 6 series is technically able to track the wearer’s blood pressure. But in the US, the watches aren’t able to use that feature. Because wrist-based blood pressure monitoring is difficult, wearables that make this claim usually require FDA clearance before being sold in the United States. A Samsung Care Ambassador claimed in a forum post from August 2023 that the company still hasn’t gotten that approval for its Galaxy Watch products.
Before the Galaxy Watch 6 series was released, Samsung was granted FDA clearance for irregular heartbeat notifications. This means that by the time the Watch 7 series is available in US stores, it may have received approval for blood pressure monitoring as well. We’re hoping Samsung can nail this one because blood pressure monitoring, when added to the range of health metrics Galaxy Watch devices can currently track, would make for a pretty comprehensive health tracking experience.
Enhanced Compatibility Anticipated for Galaxy Watch 7 Series
Usually, Samsung designs its mobile accessories to be compatible with its phones. The latest earbuds from the company allow for smooth transitions between tablets and phones bearing the Galaxy brand, but they do not support Bluetooth multipoint on devices made by other companies. Similar to this, some features of the Galaxy Watch are exclusive to pairing the wearable with a Samsung phone. Only Samsung phones officially have access to the Samsung Health Monitor app, which is only officially available through the Galaxy Store, in order to take ECG readings and monitor blood pressure in those countries that permit it.
This kind of feature exclusivity should be eased for the Watch 7 series, either by allowing the Samsung Health Monitor to be formally used with non-Samsung phones or by integrating full ECG functionality into the Galaxy Health app that is available on the Play Store.
