After confrontations broke out over the civic organization’s notice to demolish a mosque next to the Majewadi Gate on Friday, a mob hurled stones at police officers in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. According to reports, a civilian died as a result of being stoned.
A senior police officer claims that the mosque received a letter from the Junagadh Municipal Corporation on June 14 requesting that it show its documentation within five days as part of the organization’s anti-encroachment campaign. A high-tension drama resulted from this, and on Friday, 500–600 people gathered near Majewadi Gate to express their outrage about the notice. They were attempting to obstruct local roadways as a protest demonstration.
Once they arrived, police officers tried to talk the people out of blocking the road. This conversation lasted for almost 45 minutes. “At about 10:15 p.m., protesters began shouting and throwing stones at the police. The mob was subsequently dispersed by the police with a lathi charge, according to Junagadh Superintendent of Police Ravi Teja Vasamsetty.

Few police officers were hurt in the incident, including the deputy superintendent of police. 174 people have been apprehended thus far, and additional investigation is being done.
