New Delhi, January 11, 2026 – Popular singer and actor Prashant Tamang passed away at the age of 43 following a heart attack at his residence in New Delhi. The news has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and among fans across India and Nepal.
Tamang, a native of Darjeeling and of Nepali origin, first rose to national prominence in 2004 when he won Season 3 of Sony Entertainment Television’s Indian Idol. His victory was overwhelming, securing over 7 million votes, nearly ten times more than the first runner-up, Amit Paul, in the finale. His win marked a historic moment, bringing recognition to singers from the Northeast region of India.
Following his Indian Idol triumph, Tamang launched a successful music career. His debut album, Dhanyavad, featured songs in both Hindi and Nepali, reflecting his dual cultural identity. He later lent his voice to several Nepali films, including Gorkha Paltan (2010), Angalo Yo Maya Ko, and Himmat 2 (2013). Tamang was widely appreciated for bringing Nepali folk and patriotic themes to the mainstream, especially with Gorkha Paltan and Nishani, both centered on the bravery of the Gorkha soldiers and achieving blockbuster success in Nepal.
