August 29 – Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena on Thursday highlighted the transformation of a degraded stretch of the Yamuna floodplains into Baansera, a sprawling bamboo park that has emerged as a new ecological and recreational destination in the capital.
Taking to social media, the LG said the project was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of restoring 2.6 crore hectares of degraded land in the country by 2030. “We took a baby step in Delhi on 28th May 2022, right after I took over as Lt Governor,” Saxena wrote.
The initiative began with a visit to a polluted patch of land opposite Sarai Kale Khan on the Ring Road. What followed, he said, was “not only restoration, but reclamation and transformation, within a short span of 18 months, thanks to the painstaking efforts of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), custodian of the Yamuna floodplains.”

According to the LG, Baansera today hosts about 30,000 bamboo trees, each rising more than 30 feet, alongside indigenous trees, flowerbeds, lush lawns and newly created water bodies. The site, once buried under tonnes of waste and plagued by encroachment, has been turned into “an oasis” where bamboo plants emit 30 per cent more oxygen than most trees while also enriching the soil.

The park also features recreational amenities such as walking trails, a children’s play area, musical fountains, a restaurant, and open spaces for cultural activities. In recent months, it has hosted kite festivals, yoga sessions and musical evenings, drawing growing footfall from Delhi residents.
Saxena said Baansera was a “leap of faith” towards enriching Delhi’s biodiversity, adding that it has even provided fertile ground for Lakadong turmeric from Meghalaya and blooming tulips.

“Baansera epitomizes the remarkable healing of the Yamuna floodplain with improved soil health and a richer landscape, reaffirming our belief that ecosystems can be revived through gentle natural processes,” the LG said, urging residents to visit the park.
