, August 29 – In a dramatic late-evening operation on August 28, security forces seized 9.6 lakh methamphetamine tablets valued at ₹144 crore in Serchhip district, Mizoram, dealing a heavy blow to drug traffickers along India’s eastern frontier.
The joint operation, led by the Border Security Force’s Sector Headquarters, Aizawl, and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), was based on precise intelligence inputs. A Bolero pick-up truck suspected of carrying contraband was intercepted, and the tablets—locally known as Yaba—were recovered. Three individuals were arrested on the spot and are to be produced before court on Friday.

The seizure highlights the growing scale of cross-border narcotics trafficking through Mizoram, which shares a porous boundary with Myanmar, a global hub for synthetic drug production.
Meth Surpasses Heroin in Northeast Drug Trade
Mizoram, once dominated by heroin trafficking, is now witnessing an unprecedented surge in synthetic drugs, particularly methamphetamine. The state has recorded narcotics seizures worth over ₹750 crore in the past month alone, suggesting a dangerous shift in trafficking trends.

Just a day earlier, on August 27, the Mizoram Excise & Narcotics Department, in coordination with NCB and BSF’s 191 Battalion, seized heroin and meth tablets worth more than ₹75 crore. Experts note that meth—popularly referred to as “party drugs” or “ice”—is cheaper, more addictive, and increasingly targeted at younger populations, including students and unemployed youth.

“This is no longer just a law-and-order problem; it is becoming a social crisis,” warned a senior state narcotics officer.
A String of High-Value Seizures
The August 28 bust adds to a growing list of record hauls in recent months:
- July 1–25 (Champhai District): 79 kg meth & 7.85 kg heroin worth ₹12.6 crore seized.
- July 19–20 (Zokhawthar, Champhai): 10.1 kg meth (over 1 lakh tablets) recovered.
- July 24 (Champhai & Aizawl): 3 kg heroin and 36,400 meth tablets seized in 12 hours.
- July 28 (Champhai): 14.443 kg meth recovered; two arrested.
- August 1 (Zemabawk–Seling stretch, near Aizawl): Crystal meth (20.3 kg) & heroin (1.65 kg) valued at ₹350 crore confiscated.
- Early June (Aizawl–Champhai Road): 16 kg meth tablets worth ₹16 crore seized in a DRI operation.
Officials say traffickers are constantly adapting—using false compartments in vehicles, disguising drugs as consumer goods, and diverting routes through lesser-patrolled stretches of the Indo–Myanmar border. Intelligence-driven joint operations are proving crucial in intercepting consignments before they move into mainland markets.
With methamphetamine trafficking on the rise and seizures reaching record highs, Mizoram is increasingly seen as India’s new frontline in the war against synthetic narcotics.
