In a devastating and shocking incident, five individuals lost their lives and numerous others were injured after they fell onto the railway track while aboard the Mumbra-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) fast local train in Thane, Maharashtra, on Monday, as reported by the Thane Municipal Commissioner.

According to initial reports, approximately 10-15 passengers are said to have fallen onto the railway track from the moving train at Mumbra railway station.

Railway and police authorities rushed to the spot following the unfortunate event. The wounded passengers have been taken to a local medical center for care.

Indian Railways states that the large number of people inside the train caused some to fall off a compartment. Reports indicate that passengers were riding while clinging to the doors because of overcrowding.

After the incident, the Railways has determined that all train rakes being produced for Mumbai Suburban will include automatic door closing features. Furthermore, every rake in operation will be re-engineered and a door closing mechanism will be installed.

CM Fadnavis mourned loss of lives

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister expressed sorrow over the tragic event and stated, “It is truly unfortunate that 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station, resulting in some fatalities. I express my heartfelt tributes to them. We feel the sorrow of their families. Those who were injured have been promptly taken to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital for medical care. The regional government is organizing. I pray to God for the injured to find relief quickly. The Railway Department has initiated an inquiry into the precise reason for this occurrence.”

Meanwhile, Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh expressed worries regarding the state of railway tracks. In a press statement, the group mentioned that it has repeatedly highlighted concerns regarding the hazardous stretch between Diva and Kalwa, commonly known as a “death track.”
