With tension escalating after the Pahalgam terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead an important meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security at 6 pm in New Delhi today. PM Modi truncated his trip to Saudi Arabia and came back home late last night.
The heartbreaking images of victims and chilling testimonies of tourists attacked by terrorists in the scenic Baisaran Valley served as a stark reminder of the delicate peace situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
In his initital reaction to the cowardly attack of terror, PM Modi said that “those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice.” Prior to the CCS meeting, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a high-level security review with chiefs of all three armed forces along with NSA Ajit Doval.
What is Cabinet Committee on Security?
The CCS is led by the Prime Minister. Additional important members of the Committee consist of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

CCS, an entity outside the Constitution, is not referenced in the Indian Constitution. Whenever a new government assumes office, the Prime Minister is permitted to establish or reorganize the committees. The majority of Cabinet Committees are established with specific responsibilities designated to them. Typically, a Cabinet Committee consists of three members.
The number can reach eight. Typically, the Cabinet Ministers are part of these committees. However, it is not unusual for non-Cabinet Ministers to participate in these Cabinet Committee meetings.
Functions of Cabinet Committee on Security
The CCS is tasked with formulating India’s approach on crucial matters, ranging from defense policy and national security to counter-terrorism strategies. The CCS addresses and makes decisions regarding urgent matters related to India’s national security.
The committee meets as necessary to discuss and take decisions on pressing and strategic issues related to India’s security.
