India and New Zealand will meet in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday, March 9. The highly awaited title match may be legacy-defining for Rohit Sharma in his role as captain of the Indian team.

A dominant figure in ODIs and T20Is, Rohit’s reputation as one of the finest batters in the history of cricket is firmly established. However, securing the Champions Trophy as captain would elevate him to the ranks of legends.

Since assuming the captaincy in the later part of his career, Rohit has fostered a bold mindset that removes the fear of failure. This mentality has certainly transformed India’s white-ball cricket, helping the team in bouncing back from the disappointments of 2021 and 2022.

In simple words, Rohit has made sure that India keeps pace with the rapid style of contemporary white-ball cricket—an approach that helped Eoin Morgan’s England win the World Cup in 2019.

In many ways, claiming the Champions Trophy would validate the Rohit-led identity of the Indian squad in the 50-over format, demonstrating that the loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final was merely a setback in an otherwise transformative journey.

In front of Rohit stands Mitchell Santner, who has likewise been given the captaincy in the latter part of his career. Santner is leading in his inaugural ICC final at the age of 33. An experienced and frequently underestimated spinner, he possesses all the tricks necessary to create an upset.

Santner is backed by a consistent Kane Williamson, who might be appearing in his final match in this format. At present, Williamson works as a freelancer with the New Zealand team and may choose not to continue until 2027, when the next ODI World Cup occurs.

At 34, and following several injuries in the past four years, Williamson may be driven to exert himself fully in the last game against India.

There is no doubt that the spinners will decide the outcome of the Champions Trophy Final. Even if the match occurs on a new surface, which it may not, both teams concurred in the pre-game press conference that the inherent nature of the pitch will remain unchanged for this match.

IND vs NZ: Head to Head

India and New Zealand have faced each other in 119 One Day Internationals. India has secured 61 victories, whereas New Zealand has achieved 50. One match ended in a tie, whereas 7 had no outcomes.

Pitch Report

If the reports are correct and the final takes place on the same pitch as the India versus Pakistan match, the utilized surface will be slow, giving the spinners a significant edge later in the match.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
