At least four Wikipedia editors were booked after not answering the Maharashtra Cyber Cell notice regarding “objectionable content” about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and for not removing the inaccurate information from the site.
The police operation follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s instruction for the police to request Wikipedia to remove the “objectionable content.”
His action comes just when a Hindi film titled ‘Chhaava,’ inspired by the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, premiered in theaters last week and has been performing exceptionally well at the Box Office ever since.
The Cyber Cell issued a notice to Wikipedia, requesting a reply. Following three days of silence, the Cell initiated legal action against those who uploaded the content. The case was filed because Wikipedia breached Sections 69 and 79 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The Cyber Cell sent 15 emails to Wikipedia, but the platform did not respond to any, prompting police intervention on the issue.
After getting no reply, the Cyber Cell registered a case against the Wikipedia editors who published the content.
