In a heartfelt memorandum, the Association of Meiteis in the Americas highlights the dire conditions of internally displaced persons in Manipur, urging decisive leadership and intervention.

BY PC Bureau

In an impassioned plea for urgent intervention, the Association of Meiteis in the Americas (AMA) has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur to address the plight of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) caught in the midst of an unrelenting conflict. The open memorandum, sent from the AMA’s Houston office at 9700 Richmond Ave #127, Houston, TX 77042, lays bare the deteriorating conditions in Manipur—a region where generations of families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and dignity.

Manipur has long been a land of rich cultural heritage, but in recent years, the protracted conflict has destabilized the state, forcing an unprecedented number of residents to seek refuge in makeshift camps. These camps, often ill-equipped to support families for the long haul, have become the reluctant homes for many who have been uprooted by violence. The AMA’s memorandum paints a somber picture of lives upended, as ordinary citizens face an uncertain future while grappling with the daily challenges of displacement.

Beyond Politics—A Plea for Humanity

The appeal is clear: this is not a matter of party politics or ideological divisions but a fundamental plea for humanity. The AMA asserts that Prime Minister Modi’s personal visit to Manipur would serve as a powerful symbol of hope, affirming the Indian government’s unwavering commitment to justice, peace, and reconciliation. “The victims of this crisis need to see that they are not forgotten, that their voices are heard, and that their suffering is acknowledged at the highest levels of governance,” the letter states.

A Call for Decisive Leadership

According to the memorandum, the leadership of Prime Minister Modi is desperately needed to halt the violence that has fractured communities in Manipur. The AMA emphasizes that a visit to the relief camps, with direct interaction with displaced families, would do much more than bring comfort—it would foster dialogue, restore faith in governance, and set the stage for long-term peace. “Your visit would be a defining act of statesmanship, reinforcing India’s unity and commitment to the welfare of all its citizens,” the board of directors writes.

A United Call for Intervention

The AMA, representing a significant segment of the Manipur diaspora, is not alone in its plea. The organization joins the voices of countless fellow citizens in Manipur who are calling for an end to the suffering inflicted by ongoing conflict. By urging a direct intervention from the highest levels of government, the AMA hopes to catalyze a broader movement for reconciliation and reform—one that puts human dignity at the forefront of political priorities.

As the crisis in Manipur deepens, the appeal from the Association of Meiteis in the Americas stands as a heartfelt call for unity and compassion. The hope is that Prime Minister Modi’s timely intervention will not only address the immediate needs of the displaced but also pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region—a testament to India’s enduring commitment to every one of its citizens.
