West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee voiced her disappointment regarding the Kolkata court’s decision to impose life imprisonment until death on convict Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar rape and murder case on Monday.

“I am not happy… We all called for the death penalty, yet the court imposed life imprisonment,” Mamata Banerjee stated in her initial response to the Sealdah court’s ruling.

Banerjee stated that the investigation was “forcibly” taken from the Kolkata Police, and insisted that if it had remained with them, they would have guaranteed a death penalty.

Addressing journalists in Murshidabad district, Banerjee raised concerns about the CBI inquiry related to the case.

“All of us had demanded a death sentence, but the court has given a life term until death. The case was forcibly taken from us. Had it been with the (Kolkata) police, we would have ensured that he was served a death sentence,” she claimed.

“We don’t know how the probe was conducted. In many similar cases that were probed by the state police, the death penalty was ensured. I am not satisfied,” she said.

The Sealdah court handed down a life sentence to Sanjay Roy after he was found guilty of raping and murdering the doctor who was on duty at the state-operated RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
