Women’s T20 WC: Why India is hoping New Zealand defeats Australia today

India emerged victorious over Pakistan with a six-wicket margin on Sunday, yet their progress into the semi-finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 remains uncertain.

Winning all of their upcoming matches might not be enough for them to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the major event in the United Arab Emirates. Their large 58-run defeat to New Zealand in their first match is the main reason for their low net run rate of -1.217.

India aims to increase their NRR against Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka on September 9 in Dubai. Despite losing to India, Pakistan maintained their position in third place.

Australia takes on New Zealand on October 8

Australia and the White Ferns are scheduled to compete in a Group A match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, October 8. Australia, led by Alyssa Healy, holds a net run rate of +1.908, while New Zealand has a competitive net run rate of +2.900.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s team need to closely keep an eye on the game, as the match’s outcome could be crucial in determining which two teams from the group make it to the semi-finals.

Why is AUS vs NZ match crucial for India

Given that Australia, India, and New Zealand emerge victorious in all their games against Sri Lanka and Pakistan

What happens if New Zealand beat Australia

New Zealand will end up with 8 points (4 wins out of 4 matches)

If India defeats Australia in that situation, India will end up with 6 points (having won 3 out of 4 matches) and secure a direct spot in the semifinals.

What happens if Australia beat New Zealand

In this scenario, India have to beat Australia to stay in contention.

In case of an Indian victory, New Zealand, Australia, and India will all have 6 points (3 victories in 4 games each), following which the top two teams with the superior net run rate will progress.
