Residents of Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) experienced significant tremors when the national capital was struck by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake early Monday morning. An official informed news agency PTI that the epicentre was located close to Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, south Delhi.
At 5:36 am, the National Centre for Seismology tweeted that the earthquake hit at a depth of five kilometers. The official reported that a loud noise was heard when the earthquake struck Delhi-NCR.
The booming noise experienced during the earthquake might have been due to the earthquake’s shallow depth. It might have been caused by shifts in tectonic plates and multiple energy bursts.
Numerous individuals hurried out of their homes in fear after feeling the intense shakes. Clips of individuals outside their homes and fans wobbling during the quake became popular on social media. There were no reports of injuries or damage at that time.
The Delhi Fire Service and the Delhi Police did not get any reports of unusual incidents during the earthquake.
The Dhaula Kuan region, located close to a lake, has been subject to small earthquakes occurring approximately every two to three years. The official stated that a magnitude 3.3 earthquake was recorded in 2015.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to stay composed and be vigilant for potential aftershocks.
“Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” he tweeted.
