The management of the Lucknow District Jail has been on high alert since 36 recently admitted inmates tested positive for HIV, bringing the total number of cases of viral infection in the facility to 47.
All HIV-infected patients are receiving treatment in a hospital in Lucknow.
The diagnosis came as part of health tests conducted by the Uttar Pradesh health department in December 2023.
Counseling for the sick inmates has been started by the jail administration as part of their treatment. Following the reporting of these incidents, the authorities were alert and let the afflicted individuals to alter their diet. The nutrition of diseased prisoners has been boosted, a jail official told news agency ANI.
Also, all the prisoners found positive have been kept under the observation of doctors. They are receiving treatment at KGMU’s Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Centre.
