On Friday, 10 opposing MPs were suspended for one day after disorder broke out during the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.
The suspended members of parliament consist of Kalyan Banerjee, Md. Jawaid, A Raja, Asaduddin Owaisi, Nasir Hussain, Mohibullah, M. Abdullah, Arvind Sawant, Nadimul Haq, along with Imran Masood.
Following the meeting, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee condemned the committee’s chairman, Jagdambika Pal, for supposedly ignoring dissenting opinions. Banerjee criticized Pal for managing the proceedings in a style reminiscent of a “jamindari,” suggesting a dictatorial attitude.
“We continually asked for the meeting to take place on January 30 and 31, but our requests went unanswered. Upon our arrival in Delhi last night, the topic of the meeting was altered. At first, we were told that the meeting would go through each clause separately. What is occurring internally seems like an unannounced crisis. They are hurrying through matters due to the Delhi elections — it is driven by political motives. The chairman ignores everyone; it seems like ‘jamindari’. They demonstrate a lack of respect for members of the opposition. This JPC has turned into a mockery,” he said.
Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey criticized the Opposition for causing a commotion and undermining parliamentary democracy. He additionally proposed the motion to suspend the opposing MPs, which was subsequently sanctioned by the committee.

Criticizing the opposition for their behavior, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi called it “disgusting” as they repeatedly disrupted the meeting and used inappropriate language towards the panel chief.
“Opposition leaders, spearheaded by Kalyan Banerjee, employed highly inappropriate language toward JPC chairperson Jagdambika Pal, a prominent leader.” We denounce this. We wish for the meeting to take place, but simultaneously, JPC cannot go on indefinitely. “The whole conversation must conclude,” she stated.
