August 16, 2025 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump said his late-night talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “went very well” following his high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Trump ruled out an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, instead urging a direct “peace agreement” to end the conflict.
After the Alaska summit, Zelenskyy confirmed he held a “long and substantive conversation” with Trump and welcomed the proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia. He said the discussion began as a one-on-one call before European leaders, including NATO Secretary General, joined in.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote: “A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late-night phone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO.”

Trump added that all parties agreed the best path forward was a lasting peace deal rather than a fragile ceasefire. “Ceasefire agreements often do not hold up,” he said.
He also revealed that Zelenskyy would travel to Washington on Monday, where they hope to schedule a trilateral meeting with Putin — an effort Trump said “can save millions of lives.”
Alaska Summit
The Alaska talks marked Trump and Putin’s first face-to-face meeting in years. While no major breakthrough was reached for Ukraine, both leaders described the discussions as “productive.”
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to,” Trump said. “There are just a very few left. Some are not that significant, but one is probably the most significant.”
Trump rated his talks with Putin a “10 out of 10,” though he admitted some disagreements remained. He also stressed that Ukraine must “make peace,” signaling he would press Zelenskyy toward a settlement.

Zelenskyy’s Visit to the U.S.
Confirming his upcoming trip, Zelenskyy said he would meet Trump on Monday to “discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.”
“It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America,” Zelenskyy said. He noted “positive signals” from Washington about U.S. participation in Ukraine’s long-term security.
Zelenskyy added that Kyiv continues to coordinate positions with its partners and expressed gratitude to all those supporting Ukraine.
His last visit to the White House was marked by tense exchanges, when Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized him over the war and accused him of lacking gratitude after he challenged Vance’s approach to negotiations with Putin.
