President-elect Donald Trump nominated Pam Bondi, former Florida Attorney General, to replace Matt Gaetz as Attorney General after Gaetz withdrew from consideration.
Senate Republicans opposed Gaetz, leading to a House Ethics Committee investigation regarding allegations of engaging in sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl. He has refuted any accusations of misconduct.
Pam Bondi takes over after Gaetz resigns
Bondi was the chief law enforcement officer of the state with the third highest population from 2011 to 2019. During his initial term, she was a member of Trump’s commission on opioid and drug abuse.
Her resume differs from Gaetz’s, who lacks the typical experience one would expect from an attorney general. Bondi would probably encounter fewer obstacles from senators participating in the confirmation procedure.

Trump took to social media to announce his selection of Bondi, commending her prosecutorial background and highlighting her reputation for being strict on crime during her tenure as Florida’s first female attorney general.
Despite facing multiple criminal investigations from US and state prosecutors, including a felony conviction in New York, Trump was elected on November 5. He stated that Bondi would stop the politicization of federal prosecutions.
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponised against me and other Republicans – Not anymore,” Trump said.
