Birmingham, England:

Fresh from leading India to a dominant 336‑run win over England at Edgbaston their first-ever Test victory at the venue captain Shubman Gill delivered a light-hearted riposte in the post-match press conference that had room and fans erupting with laughter.

A Historic Win:

India sealed a commanding victory by an imposing margin of 336 runs, leveling the five-match series 1–1. The touring side posted huge scores, with Gill himself top-scoring in both innings an astonishing 269 in the first and 161 in the second, totaling a record 430 runs in the match. The bowlers backed him emphatically as well, with Akash Deep registering a ten-wicket haul and Mohammed Siraj wreaking havoc with the new ball.

Gill’s Quip Lights Up the Room:

Earlier in the match, an English journalist reminded Gill of India’s dismal Edgbaston record no wins in eight Tests at the ground. In the post‑win presser, as laughter lingered from the day’s triumph, Gill paused, theatrically looked around the room, and quipped:

“I can’t see… my favourite journalist. Where is he?”

The room broke into hearty guffaws, teammates grinned ear to ear, and even the normally composed media couldn’t hide their amusement. The jibe was playful but potent underscoring India’s newfound confidence.

No Place for Past Records:

Gill followed up his jest with a reflection on the match and the broader mindset of the team:

“I don’t believe in stats or histories… over the last 50–60 years, we’ve played just seven matches here,” he noted.

With his opening comment and confident framing, Gill captured both the humour and the bravery behind the win.

Dominance on All Fronts:

India’s victory at Edgbaston was consummate: Gill’s twin centuries laid the foundation before Deep (10 wickets) and Siraj took over, bundling England out for 271 in the final innings. The result was India’s biggest away Test win by run margin and a symbolic breakthrough on English soil.

India will now head to Lord’s for the third Test starting July 10, buoyed by their unwavering belief and Gill’s assured captaincy. The cheeky interlude with the press showed more than wit it demonstrated a team ready to break history rather than be bound by it.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
