Approved by NEERI, green crackers use cleaner fuels and low-emission chemicals, making them safer for the environment and public health.

NEW DELHI, October 15: The Supreme Court of India has allowed the use of green crackers in the National Capital Region (NCR) for Diwali, easing the year-long blanket ban on firecrackers. The order comes with strict restrictions to ensure public safety and protect air quality.
What Are Green Crackers?
Green crackers are a new generation of firecrackers designed to reduce air pollution. Unlike traditional firecrackers, which release high levels of smoke, carbon, and harmful chemicals such as barium, lithium, lead, and mercury, green crackers are made using cleaner fuels and low-emission chemicals. They also produce less smoke and noise, making them environmentally friendly while still preserving the festive spirit.

Supreme Court Guidelines for Diwali 2025
Under the Supreme Court order, the sale and use of NEERI-approved green crackers in the NCR will be permitted from October 18 to October 21, 2025. Key restrictions include:
-
Sales limited to designated locations approved by district authorities.
-
No online sales through e-commerce platforms.
-
Timing restrictions for bursting crackers: 6–7 AM and 8–10 PM on Diwali and the day before; other festivals have separate timings.
-
Strict monitoring by police and district officials to ensure only approved crackers are sold.
-
Air quality monitoring by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards during the festival period.

Authorities will take strict action against unapproved crackers, including seizure of products and suspension of licenses. The measure aims to balance cultural celebration with environmental protection, allowing citizens to enjoy the festival while minimizing harm to air quality.
Why This Matters
The NCR often experiences poor air quality during Diwali due to traditional firecrackers. Green crackers are seen as a sustainable alternative, reducing harmful emissions while allowing people to celebrate. By permitting only NEERI-approved crackers with QR codes, authorities can ensure compliance, prevent illegal sales, and monitor environmental impact.
The Supreme Court’s decision reflects a middle path between public health concerns and cultural traditions, allowing citizens to celebrate safely while protecting the environment.
