February 28, 2026: The United States has joined Israel in its latest wave of military strikes against Iran, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions between the longtime adversaries and raising fears of a broader regional conflict, according to a U.S. official and another person familiar with the operation.
Powerful explosions were reported across Tehran early Saturday morning, as Israel confirmed it had launched what it described as pre-emptive strikes targeting Iranian military and strategic infrastructure.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation was aimed at neutralizing what he called imminent threats to Israel’s security.
“The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” Katz said in a statement, signaling the government’s intent to act decisively against perceived dangers.
Initial reports indicated that one of the early strikes targeted locations near the offices and residences associated with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in central Tehran. However, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters that Khamenei was not present in the capital at the time and had already been moved to a secure, undisclosed location as a precautionary measure.

Iranian state media confirmed multiple explosions in and around Tehran but did not immediately provide details on casualties or damage. Air defense systems were reportedly activated, and security forces were deployed across key government and military zones.
The involvement of the United States represents a significant shift, suggesting coordination between Washington and Israel in the operation. While U.S. officials did not publicly disclose the scope of American participation, sources indicated that U.S. military assets may have provided operational support, intelligence, or defensive assistance.

The strikes come amid mounting tensions between Israel and Iran over Tehran’s expanding military capabilities and regional influence. Israeli officials have repeatedly warned that they would act to prevent Iran from acquiring weapons or capabilities that could threaten Israeli territory.
Regional observers warned that the strikes could trigger retaliation from Iran or its allied forces across the Middle East, potentially drawing multiple countries into a wider confrontation.
Authorities in Iran have yet to announce a formal military response, but senior officials have vowed in the past that any direct attack on Iranian soil would be met with “decisive and proportional retaliation.”
The situation remains fluid, with global leaders closely monitoring developments amid fears that the confrontation could rapidly escalate into a broader regional war.
