- Delhi Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, has advised the AAP government to increase the stipend paid to ASHA Workers in Delhi from the current Rs. 3,000 per month to Rs. 9,000. This recommendation comes after a delegation of ASHA and Aangwadi Workers met with the LG at Raj Niwas and highlighted the stagnation of their stipends since 2018, despite a provision for revisions every three years. The delegation also expressed concern over the non-payment of salaries to Aangwadi Supervisors for the past seven months.
The ASHA Workers, who serve as community health workers under the National Health Mission, have been advocating for a raise in their stipend due to rising inflation and the government’s lack of responsiveness to their concerns. The current stipend was last revised in 2018, contrary to the cabinet’s decision to review it every three years.
During the meeting, the delegation presented their grievances to the LG, requesting his intervention. While acknowledging that these matters fall under the jurisdiction of the AAP government, LG Saxena expressed empathy for their situation and deemed their demands justifiable. He assured them that he would advise the government to address their concerns promptly.
This action by the LG underscores the importance of improving the working conditions and compensation of these essential frontline workers who play a crucial role in public health.
