April 7, 2026 — A deadly overnight attack in Manipur has left two young children dead and their mother critically injured, in what authorities describe as a major escalation in the state’s ongoing ethnic conflict.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in Moirang Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district, near the foothills bordering Churachandpur. Suspected militants fired an explosive projectile—believed to be a mortar or rocket—into a civilian home while the family was asleep. A 5-year-old boy and his infant sister were killed instantly, while their mother sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Residents said the projectile may have been launched from hill positions over three kilometers away, underscoring the continued vulnerability of valley settlements.
Local MLA Th Shanti Singh condemned the attack as “brutal,” alleging the involvement of Kuki militant elements, though no group has officially claimed responsibility.

The strike comes amid prolonged tensions between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki-Zo groups. Since violence erupted in May 2023, over 260 people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced, with communities now largely segregated.
Despite security measures, buffer zones, and a new state government under Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, sporadic attacks—including gunfire and bombings—have continued.
Security forces have launched a probe and are expected to intensify operations in the area. The killings have triggered widespread outrage, with fears that the incident could further inflame tensions in an already volatile region.
The condition of the injured mother remains under close medical supervision.
