Trump’s answer to mystery drones: shoot them down

Unexplained drones in New Jersey skies have captured public attention and sparked a frenzy of speculation. From former President Trump’s call to “shoot them down” to night hunts by drone enthusiasts, the saga continues to mystify as officials scramble for answers.

Are they manned aircraft, advanced surveillance systems, or something more mysterious? With federal officials, state leaders, and even former President Trump weighing in, the unidentified drones over New Jersey have become the latest national obsession.

The skies over New Jersey are a battleground of mystery and speculation, with unidentified drones sparking debates at the highest levels of government—and now, former President Donald J. Trump has weighed in with a dramatic call to action.

“Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social earlier this week. “Can this really be happening without our government’s knowledge? I (don’t) think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, (shoot) them down!”

Trump’s fiery statement comes amid growing public fascination—and frustration—with the strange objects that have been spotted over the Garden State in recent weeks. The federal government, however, has taken a more cautious approach.

Mixed Signals from the White House

On Thursday, White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby offered a measured response, clarifying that many of the sightings are actually “lawfully operated manned aircraft” and do not pose a threat to national security or public safety.

When pressed during a Fox News interview on why the government hasn’t taken action to down one of the drones for closer examination, Kirby emphasized the need to “develop policy options” to ensure public safety during any potential interventions.

The ambiguity surrounding these sightings has only fueled public interest and skepticism, with residents and officials alike calling for more definitive answers.

Drone-Hunters and Political Spectacle

From social media sleuths to elected officials, New Jerseyans are taking the mystery into their own hands. Groups of enthusiasts have begun “drone-hunting” at night, armed with flight tracker apps and a sense of adventure.

Senator Andy Kim, D-NJ, joined the effort earlier this week, heading to Hunterdon County’s Round Valley Reservoir to observe the drones alongside local law enforcement.

“We saw a few that looked like they were moving in small clusters of 2-4,” Kim shared on X (formerly Twitter). “We clearly saw several that would move horizontally and then immediately switch back in the opposite direction—maneuvers that planes can’t do.”

Kim also noted that law enforcement helicopters attempting to approach the drones reported they would “go dark,” shutting off their lights to avoid detection.

A Plea for Federal Action

The state’s leadership isn’t sitting idly by. Governor Phil Murphy, joined by congressional representatives, sent a letter to President Joe Biden on Thursday urging increased federal support to address concerns about the drones.

The letter cited a growing unease over the potential risks posed by unmanned aircraft systems near critical airspace and infrastructure.

Despite reassurances from officials that there’s no evidence of an immediate threat, federal representatives admitted during a congressional hearing on Tuesday that they still can’t definitively say whether the drones pose a danger.

The Public Demands Answers

The ongoing drone saga has captured the imagination of the public, sparking a swirl of theories ranging from foreign surveillance operations to advanced U.S. military technology—or even extraterrestrial activity.

For now, the mystery remains unsolved. As government agencies deliberate over next steps, the people of New Jersey continue to gaze skyward, wondering who—or what—might be piloting these enigmatic crafts.

The call for transparency is clear: whether through policy, investigation, or dramatic action, the skies of New Jersey demand answers.
